THE ROYAL FAMILY comes to
Cheltenham Town Hall 1999

THE ROYAL FAMILY Programme front cover

On the night of 12th March 1999 I was at the Town Hall again. This time it was to see THE ROYAL FAMILY, not THE Royal Family but a Queen Tribute Band.

The band came on to the sounds of DEATH ON TWO LEGS and proceeded to play WE WILL ROCK YOU (original version). The first half (which lasted about an hour) contained hits from Queen's career upto 1980 and included tracks like NOW I'M HERE, DON'T STOP ME NOW, BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY with KILLER QUEEN replacing the Operatic part, LET ME ENTERTAIN YOU (not the Robbie Williams song), and ended with Freddie coming on stage on a Motor Bike and then singing CRAZY LITTLE THING CALLED LOVE.

After a 20 minute break the show continued by starting with ONE VISION. This half would reflect the classic concert of WEMBLY 1986 and contain tracks like A KIND OF MAGIC, UNDER PRESSURE, ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST, RADIO GA GA, HAMMER TO FALL, and I WANT TO BREAK FREE, for which they wheeled a couch on to the stage and Freddie came on in drag as in the video.

The show ended with WE WILL ROCK YOU, FRIENDS WILL BE FRIENDS, and finally WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS.

THE ROYAL FAMILY Personnel

To sum up my feelings about the band, they are simply CHAMPIONS.
